What is a CLI?

CLI stands for Command Line Interface. It's a way to interact with your computer by typing text commands instead of clicking buttons and icons. Every computer has one. On Windows, it's called Command Prompt or PowerShell. On Mac, it's called Terminal. It's a blank window where you type instructions and the computer responds with text.

The Factory Analogy

Your CNC machine has two ways to operate: manual mode (turning handwheels, pressing buttons on the panel) and G-code mode (typing precise instructions that the machine follows automatically).

The chat interface (ChatGPT website, Claude.ai) is like manual mode — intuitive, visual, good for simple jobs. The CLI is like G-code — text-based, more powerful, and it can do things that manual mode simply cannot. You don't need to be a programmer to use the CLI. You need to know 5–10 basic commands, just like a machinist needs to know basic G-codes to set up a job.
